“I Just Want Someone Who Gets Me”: Why the Right Therapeutic Fit Matters

Sometimes people know exactly what they want when they're looking for a therapist.

Other times, they only know one thing:

“I want someone who gets me.”

And that's not asking too much.

The relationship between you and your therapist can be an important part of your experience in therapy. Credentials and clinical experience matter, but so do trust, communication, comfort, and connection.

What Does “The Right Fit” Actually Mean?

There isn't one perfect therapist for everyone.

One person may love a therapist who is direct, structured, and ready to challenge them.

Someone else may need a therapist who slows things down, listens carefully, and gives them plenty of space to process.

You might want humor in the therapy room.

You might appreciate homework and specific goals.

You may want someone who understands your cultural background or family dynamics.

You may need someone experienced in working with trauma, anxiety, depression, ADHD, grief, relationships, or children.

None of those preferences make you difficult.

They make you human.

It's Okay to Pay Attention to How Therapy Feels

Your first few sessions aren't only an opportunity for your therapist to learn about you.

They're also an opportunity for you to learn about your therapist.

Ask yourself:

Do I feel heard?

Can I be honest here?

Does this person seem curious about my experience rather than making assumptions?

Can I ask questions?

Do I understand what we're working toward?

Do I feel respected?

And perhaps most importantly:

Can I imagine eventually talking to this person about the things that are hardest for me to talk about?

You don't necessarily have to feel completely comfortable immediately. Trust often develops over time.

But you should feel like there's room for that trust to grow.

Your Therapist Doesn't Have to Be Exactly Like You

Finding someone who “gets you” doesn't necessarily mean finding someone with the exact same background, personality, experiences, or beliefs.

A good therapeutic relationship leaves room for curiosity and understanding.

Your therapist should be willing to learn about your world rather than assuming they already understand it.

That's an important distinction.

What If You've Tried Therapy Before?

Maybe you've already been to therapy.

And maybe you didn't love it.

That experience counts—but it doesn't necessarily tell you what every future therapy experience will be like.

Sometimes the approach wasn't right.

Sometimes the timing wasn't right.

Sometimes you weren't ready.

And sometimes the therapist simply wasn't your person.

A poor fit with one therapist doesn't automatically mean therapy isn't for you.

Trying someone different can create an entirely different experience.

That's Why Our Team Matters

At Therapeutic Empowerment & Wellness, we aren't trying to make every clinician the same.

We value having a team with different personalities, experiences, specialties, perspectives, and therapeutic styles because the people who come to us aren't all the same either.

The therapist who's perfect for one person might not be the best fit for another.

That's okay.

In fact, that's the point.

Different people. Different stories. Different needs. Different ways of healing.

Maybe Your Person Is Here

You don't have to know exactly which clinician you need.

Tell us what's important to you.

Tell us what you're struggling with.

Tell us what you're hoping will be different.

You can even tell us:

“I don't know exactly what I need. I just want someone who understands.”

That's a place to start.

At Therapeutic Empowerment & Wellness, we believe finding care should feel personal—because it is.

One team. Many perspectives. One place to start.

We see everyone.

We have someone for everyone.

Looking for someone who gets you?

Finding the right therapist doesn't have to feel overwhelming. Therapeutic Empowerment & Wellness offers therapy for children, teens, adults, couples, and families, along with medication management and additional behavioral health support.
